The first Indian to win an individual medal in the Olympics was Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav 

He won a bronze medal in wrestling at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics

in the men's freestyle bantamweight category 

Before Jadhav's achievement, India had won Olympic medals only in team events, 

particularly in field hockey.
